Square Foot Gardening – Sunday, May 3 at 10am, 11am and 1pm

Grow your own fresh, delicious, healthy vegetables right in your own backyard, on your patio or on your porch. Join Jo Ann Carey as she introduces this concept of growing more food in smaller spaces. She will touch upon getting your garden started, planting, watering, growing vertically, pest control and harvesting.   Square foot gardening uses only 20% of the space, and saves both water and time.  The full workshop will be offered later in the year.

Terrace Garden Designers

Edible gardens need not be restricted to large spaces. Within limited space or financial resources, we can still set a table for a friend and ourselves and enjoy a delicious salad harvested in our own terrace or patio garden. We can create a full menu…including dessert by creating vertical vegetable garden walls out of reusable wooden pallets and plastic storage bins alongside a potted Myer’s Lemon or a pear tree grown on rootstock. Small space edible gardens can even be modern and sophisticated with crisp lettuces, fragrant herbs and delicious fruits planted in pots, wooden window boxes or half wine barrels.

We are proud to present a series of intimate designer gardens throughout the show grounds that create an understanding of how colorful flowers, lush edible plantings and dwarf fruit trees can transform a small terrace or balcony space into a quiet respite from our busy lives. The scent of rosemary, the sound of a soothing water feature, the feel of warm soil in our hands while potting organic fruits, vegetables and edible flowers is something all of us can delight in, no matter how small our gardening space.

A Taste of Spring

When we thought of “A Festival of Flavors”, our design team imagined constructing an edible demonstration garden, which could adapt and change throughout the year.  Inspiration was derived by the difficult economic times we face now and in the future. In addition, our environment has suffered greatly over many years of abuse. In response to these problems we plan to create a self-sustaining and eco-friendly example for others to follow.  The water feature is designed to use as little water as possible and actually capture rainwater and run off to protect the environment.

Steve Sandalis is the owner of Mystic Water Gardens and a member of CLCA and CAC and was selected to represent Southern California for the CAC Advisory Council. Sandalis was host on Discovery Show and Animal Planet and was also featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Steve recently shot a “Do-It-Yourself” video for Home Depot on water gardens. He was awarded “Best Water Feature in the State of California” by CLCA in 2006, has been featured in WaterShape magazine, LA Times and WaterGarden News. Sandalis has been fortunate enough to work with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He has also donated water features to many schools and community centers to help teach children about the importance of protecting our environment.

The Power of Plants

Plants grow all around us. They sustain the whole of the animal kingdom. People need flowers and plants for food, clothing, and medicine. Plants even help make the air we breathe. What is the power of plants? The power to sustain, the power to heal, the power to altar consciousness, the power over the spirit. To plant a seed, tend the soil, and watch a plant grow is one of the most inspiring hopeful activities. The act of gardening promotes physical adjustments thus improving body, mind and spirit.

Matt-Dell Tufenkina is a native Angelino, born in Pasadena, California. As a boy his backyard’s hillsides were connected and terraced with different patios and sections. There was the apple patio, the apricot patio, the greenhouse, the berry vine, the rosemary hillside, the mulch pile and lots of stairs. He had his own watering can with his name painted on it at age two. At age eight, he grew and exhibited plants – winning numerous awards, including best in show. He is an award-winning artist and multi-media studio assistant. Currently he is living in Pasadena and working as a multi-media landscape artist and garden maker.

The Accessible Edible Garden

All of us face the possibility of reduced physical ability from injury or age. Despite reduced ability, we can keep gardening if a few thoughtful ideas are put into practice. Garden beds raised to table height enable wheel chair users to reach garden areas. The beds are also narrow and curved so more of the garden can be reached from any spot. Pathways are firm and wide for easy turning. Herbs, vegetables and annual flowers complete this accessible edible garden.

Laramee Haynes is a landscape designer and contractor in Pasadena. In 2001 Laramee left his engineering career and purchased a landscaping company. He made this change to pursue a more artistic life. Laramee especially enjoys the combination of science and art needed to create beautiful gardens.

The Light-er Fare Garden

One of the greatest things about living in California is the amount of time we get to spend outdoors. And some may say that the next best thing is having the ability to grow our own food right in our own gardens, whether they be large or small.  By day, this small but very functional garden is a locavore’s delight – a virtual harvest of fruit, citrus, veggies and edible flowers. But by night, the careful placement of Candlelit mood lighting transforms the Light-er Fare Garden into an intimate, cozy den, just right for dining and romance.

Nick Williams has been a landscape designer for more than 50 years, specializing in residential remodels. He believes that a garden should evoke emotion in those that visit. His combination of nature’s elements – fire, earth, air and water – always encourages people to enter one of his gardens, sit awhile and just “be.”

Punctuation in the Garden – A Gallery of Edible Design

Professional landscape designers frequently employ pots, sculpture or containers to 'punctuate' a garden. They act as focal points, details, or simply lead the eye about and the right choice adds flourish and finish to a well-designed space.

Expanding upon the 'punctuation' concept, local members of APLD are showcasing their originality and creative designs in a group exhibition consisting of an array of eye-catching focal points for use in the garden or landscape.

Composed with innovative containers, edible plants and imagination these artworks are fun, elegant, quirky and provide sustenance!  They are exhibited in a garden-gallery setting and cover a wide range of design styles suitable for a California garden.

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) is an international organization dedicated to promoting the highest professional standards for landscape designers. The California Chapter includes local districts throughout the state that provide members many ways to further develop their professional skills and keep abreast of the latest information and developments in the field.

APLD members agree to protect the environment, discourage damage to our natural resources and conduct their responsibilities in a manner that enhances the status of landscape design as a respected profession. A certified APLD member is a mark of distinction. Hiring a professional landscape designer can be one of the smartest investments you make. Capturing the Sprit of Yakushima

Called “The Alps of the Ocean”, Japan’s Yakushima Island is noted for its biodiversity of plant life, from enormous, ancient Cedars dotting the snow clad mountain tops, to forests of various other trees and shrubs carpeted with grasses, moss and ferns, to Orchids and many other tropical plants that meet the sandy shores where giant sea turtles come to nest. Starting with only the rare, coral-barked Yakushima Crepe Myrtle, previously planted in his garden, Lew Watanabe has designed a retreat that echoes this mysterious land of granite and water. The Weeping Wall, created to mimic the many waterfalls on Yakushima, is crafted of African black granite. The native granite water bowl suggests the many streams that converge to create the many falls.

Lew Watanabe’s site-specific sculptures deal with an encompassing visual and tactile experience. He conceives each piece of his art as a landscape, dealing with open sky, light, plants and stone. In 1987, Watanabe began designing and building his granite weeping water walls, and was immediately praised for his ability to create meditative pieces that inspire reflection and serenity.
