PROBATION DEPARTMENT CHAMPIONS PERMANENCY FOR YOUTH

 

Since last year’s historical Delinquency Court adoption, the Department has built up its efforts in creating permanency opportunities for children in their care.  “We are gathering experts and stakeholders to build permanency outcomes for probation foster youth,” said Dave Mitchell, Placement Services Bureau Chief for the Probation Department.  The Department has set this Friday, April 9^th at the Cerritos College Student Center to bring national expert Pat O’Brien, Executive Director and founder of the You Gotta Believe! The Older Child Adoption and Permanency Movement Agency to lead a host of key leaders, professionals and stakeholders in making connections that will result in permanency for probation youth. 

 

The event 2010 PATHWAYS TO PERMANENCY FOR PROBATION YOUTH EXPO is scheduled to start at 9AM this Friday is a collaboration supported by rhe Department of Children and Family Services, County Counsel, Alliance for Children’s Rights, and the Delinquency Court.  “Our efforts over the past year have resulted in seven legal guardianships and our second and third adoptions are almost finalized” said Mitchell, “and we intend to focus on this success as a platform for building a world-class foster care system.”   The Pathways to Permanency Expo will feature Presiding Judge Michael Nash, Interim Chief Probation Officer Cal Remington, Deputy Director Reaver Bingham and the Senior Director for LA County Casey Family Programs Yakiciwey Mitchell.

COUNTY SEEKS TO CREATE 15,000 SUMMER YOUTH JOBS

 

LOS ANGELES, April 6, 2010 – Los Angeles County will soon be expanding its Summer Youth Employment Program, Supervisor Don Knabe announced today.  The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisors Knabe and Zev Yaroslavsky to significantly increase the number of youth eligible to get a summer job.  The expanded program could employ as many as 15,000 youth throughout the County.

 

State rules allow for local governments to utilize American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to provide summer youth employment for a specific group of qualifying young people, including those in CalWORKs families, in foster care or emancipating from foster care.  The County could draw down as much as $11.7 million in federal funds to create the 15,000 summer jobs.  The expansion of this important program is made possible by the successful partnerships that the County already has in place.

 

Just over a year ago the Board of Supervisors approved a plan to develop employment opportunities for up to 10,000 County residents, utilizing American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds.  As a result, an unprecedented collaboration emerged between Los Angeles County and the Workforce Investment Boards across the County, and yielded employment for over 11,000 adults and youth.

 

“There is a tremendous need for our youth to be meaningfully engaged in positive activities in our communities, and employment is vital to that experience,” said Supervisor Knabe.  “We will continue to take full advantage of every opportunity to provide summer jobs to thousands of young people, which for many is their only chance to learn and practice the skills needed to transition into a self-sufficient adulthood.”

VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR THE MAY 4, 2010

PASADENA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SPECIAL PARCEL TAX ELECTION

Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean Logan today reminded eligible residents in the Pasadena Unified School District that Monday, April 19, 2010 is the last day to register to vote in the District’s upcoming Special Parcel Tax Election on May 4, 2010.

This election is being conducted as an all Vote-by-Mail election.  The purpose of the election is to submit Measure CC pertaining to a special parcel tax to qualified voters of the Pasadena Unified School District.

Individuals who wish to register must be at least 18 years of age by Election Day, a U.S. Citizen and resident of Los Angeles County, and not in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony.  If the voter has recently moved, made a legal name change, or wishes to change political party affiliation, the voter must re-register to vote.  Individuals must reside within the Pasadena Unified School District to vote in the election on May 4.

48^TH ANNUAL RENAISSANCE PLEASURE FAIRE RETURNS TO

SANTA FE DAM RECREATION AREA IN IRWINDALE, CALIFORNIA

 

(IRWINDALE, CA) - The 48^th Annual Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire, “Where Fantasy Rules!” returns to the Los Angeles County Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, located at 15501 E. Arrow Highway, Irwindale, CA 91706 every Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from April 10, 2010 through May 23, 2010. 

 

The Renaissance Pleasure Faire embodies the 16^th Century Elizabethan period with its presentation of a true English port-town faire and marketplace throughout 20 acres of shaded pavilions and thoroughfares. The Faire will take place during seven weekends, from April 10, 2010 through May 23, 2010, with more than 2,000 costumed performers bringing Shakespeare’s England to life, seven parades crossing the Faire throughout the day and 12 stages of continuous entertainment spread around the village.   Also at the Fair will be 150 craft artisans, hand-powered rides, games, hearty English ales, fine wines, and over 100 gourmet foods for a full day of revelry, shopping, and fun.

 

The Faire was established in 1963 in Agoura, near Malibu, to create “living history” for schoolchildren and their families, and has grown into an annual interactive playground and gallery for more than 200,000 participants and guests.  Since its inception, more than 5 million people from around the world have visited the California Renaissance Pleasure Faire, averaging approximately 25,000 each weekend.

 

The Pleasure Faire also has a special day just for students - Friday, April 23, 2010 from 9:30 am until 3:30 pm.  School day tickets must be purchased in advance as the box office will be closed to the general public that day.  The Faire format will be tailored just for kids in an interactive structure. 

 

Los Angeles County Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area is a beautiful, 836-acre park that includes a lake, green foliage and abundant parking.  It is located right off the Irwindale exit of the 210 Freeway, just east of where the 210 and 605 Freeways cross.

Health care, immigration reform, mid-term elections: all in a day’s work for Xavier Becerra

Back in the district on Spring recess, Congressman Xavier Becerra is fresh off a landmark legislative victory in getting health care reform out of Congress and onto the president’s desk.  But the Congressman’s “to-do” list only starts with health care:  next up is an immigration bill that provides a clear path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants in the U.S., a jobs-creation bill with real muscle, a spot on the national debt commission and a vital role in defending Democratic seats in the Congressional mid-term elections.  Combine all of that with priorities from back home in Los Angeles and the Congressman is a busy man, but not too busy to stop by the studio with Patt to take your questions and comments on a litany of subject.

U.S. begins 5-month push into Afghanistan

In what officials are referring to as “March Madness,” the military is gearing up for one of the largest movements of troops since World War II, set to occur over the next five months.  The plan involves packing up containers of tents, showers and construction material needed to set up a remote forward operating base, in addition to removing 50,000 American forces from Iraq and transferring 30,000 reinforcements through the Khyber Pass linking Pakistan and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Afghan president Hamid Karzai is ruffling feathers and raising suspicions in Washington that he’s a less-than-reliable partner in creating a stable, corruption-free Afghan government.

Harold Evans’ Paper Chase: True Stories of Vanished Times

Harold Evans, editor of the Sunday Times from 1967 until Rupert Murdoch acquired the paper in 1981, made a name for himself by pursuing stories hidden from public view, as he did when, upon his arrival at the paper, he pushed against the Ministry of Health to cover the stories of families affected by use of the sedative drug thalidomide.  Evans pushed the envelope, publishing pictures of children who had been born missing limbs. That editorial decision landed him in court with the British government, trading victories and appeals until the case ultimately ended up before the European Court of Human Rights.  Evans' eventual triumph there forced the British government to reform its law blocking free speech in cases of what he claimed was "manifest injustice.” Patt talks with Sir Evans about his adventures in reporting and the remarkable changes he witnessed in the newspaper industry, from typing four carbon copies at his Underwood typewriter, to the age of the internet and Rupert Murdoch.
