The Suddenly Sexy Role of the FDIC

A legacy of the Great Depression, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation happily lived in relative anonymity over the past 70 years as seldom-used but valuable resource.  With the ongoing credit calamity and the failure of several banks—and the prospect of more bank failures to come—people are suddenly taking note of the FDIC and specifically the insurance reserves that are in place to protect Americans’ savings and checking accounts.  The news isn’t good:  the FDIC reports that commercial bank profits are down 87% this year and the agency’s list of “problem” banks is rapidly growing.  With a potential upcoming role in the banking bailout package, can the FDIC handle the pressure?
