The L.A. Times, Hobgoblins And Jamiel's Law By Walter Moore, Candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles, WalterMooreForMayor.com October 5, 2008 Today the L.A. Times published an editorial praising ICE for recently "rounding up 1,700 illegal immigrants convicted of crimes or linked to criminal gangs -- including about 400 in the Los Angeles area." The L.A. Times then admitted, "It has been obvious for years that illegal immigrants provide much of the muscle for gangs such as MS-13 and La Mirada Loco." "Most of those seized in the sweep," the paper added, "seem to be gang members and criminals, including a notorious sex offender." "Gangbangers, gunmen and child molesters are obviously in a different category" the paper concluded, from illegal aliens who come here to work. If the paper were written by intellectually honest people, the next line would set forth a rousing endorsement of Jamiel's Law, and acknowledge the paper erred by opposing it in the past. The L.A. Times would urge Villaraigosa to adopt it with the stroke of a pen, and, failing that, demand that City Council enact it forthwith. Heck, they could even credit the guy who wrote Jamiel's Law, namely, yours truly, and mention I'm running for Mayor. But that's not how the ideologues at the L.A. Times operate. No mention is made of Jamiel's Law. No mention of the fact that the City of Los Angeles prevents police from going after gang members for immigration law violations. Instead, the L.A. Times remains consistent: its editors oppose any reform whatsoever of Special Order 40, no matter how slight, no matter how many lives it would save, and no matter how much sense it makes. Ralph Waldo Emerson said a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. The people who own the L.A. Times, however, don't have little minds. Rather, they have a vested financial interest in fighting any effort to enforce our immigration laws. You see, the Tribune Publishing Company owns not just the L.A. Times, but also Hoy, a Spanish-language newspaper. Illegal immigration is their cash cow, their sacred cow. So they hire idealogues to publish inane editorials from people determined to avoid connecting the dots. The people who call the shots at that paper don't give a damn about your quality of life, or even the survival of our country. They care about their bottom line, period. They don't want editors, they want propagandists for their business model. If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, they'll call it an octopus if that's what it takes to keep the public uninformed. And they'll call you a racist to intimidate you into silence and to persuade others to shun you. What can we do about it? Don't bother writing a letter to the editor. The editors don't care about you. And you can bet they are going to ignore my campaign as long as possible and, when they finally do have to cover it, will smear me like crazy. Rather than writing a letter to the editor, write a check to my campaign. Write an email to your friends, urging them to do the same, and to join us at our rally at 7:00 p.m. on October 14 at the Woodland Hills Marriott. We are going to have to buy our publicity, to let our fellow voters know what's going on at City Hall, and how they can stop it. Click here to contribute. |
