Student loans 101—who’s getting them, how much, and how long they’ll take to repay

College may the best years of your life, or it better be, if you’re going to be paying off or defaulting on those student loans well into mid-life. According to a new survey from the Institute for Higher Education Policy, only 37% of students pay back their loans on time; about ¼ of them need to postpone payments to avoid delinquency; and 2 out of every 5 are delinquent at some point in the first five years of repaying the loans. The numbers show education is a priority for Americans—at an estimated $896 billion, total student debt amounts to more than Americans’ credit-card debt—but as the average loan continues to rise ($24,000 last year) along with default rates, how can students know how to weigh the importance of a college education with mounting debt? The Department of Education has proposed regulations to would cut off federal aid to programs whose students graduate with high debt-to-income ratios at for-profit colleges, but what advice should students heed in the meantime?

Cop Talk: LAPD Chief Charlie Beck takes your questions

Local law enforcement is supposed to work with federal immigration officials under the Security Communities program to identify criminal illegal aliens, but how will that work in a city with a majority minority population? And one doesn’t have to look far in L.A. to find a “massage parlor” and it’s no secret that some of these establishments aren’t exactly legitimate. Will the LAPD begin cracking down on this loosely policed industry? Party buses are facing scrutiny for being the sites of binge drinking and the irresponsibility that goes along with it. Five people were recently injured while attending one such party bus and the public is looking to the law for answers. Police Chief Charlie Beck is in the studio to tackle these issues and more. Will he discuss the recently imposed payment freeze? You make the calls; he’ll be here to take them.
