Topic: School district restricts hugging: Everyone loves a good hug, right? Well, while most people don’t mind, there are some groups which draw the line. Introverts and germaphobes traditionally refrain from a warm embrace, but now there’s also an entire school district which is cracking down on the practice. In St. Mary’s County, Maryland, school administrators have prohibited adults in elementary schools from hugging or touching any students who are not their own. The district points out that this is only one facet of a larger response to making schools safer in the wake of the Newtown tragedy. Non-parent volunteers also must face background checks, and parents may only interact with their own children at recess. Some of these new parameters are being welcomed as appropriate ways of reducing the danger children may face, but the hugging rule provides a sticking point for a lot of parents. After all, some children simply need to be hugged after squabbling with another student or falling and scraping their knees. So is this going too far? Is it best to place child protection above all other considerations? What are other ways in which schools are addressing this larger problem?
