The celebration with be held in a neighborhood cul-de-sac, north of Avenue K-10/ 37th Street West between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Although the celebration is open to everyone, it is especially intended for the residents of the target area (Trend Tract) who partnered in this.

Public Safety, Code Enforcement, Parks & Recreations, Public Works and other departments. The Sheriff’s Department will have specialty vehicles on display as well as booths set up to answer questions and provide information on volunteering opportunities and other topics. Members of the Sheriff’s Department’s administration will be there to interact with members of the community and share up to date information relevant to Lancaster communities.

Background:

During the early part of March, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s C.O.P.S. Team (Community Oriented Policing Services) targeted a specific area for crime suppression and gang eradication. C.O.P.S. Deputies and numerous volunteers from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station knocked on the doors of every home in the targeted area and completed surveys designed to gather information from the residents about crime and other quality of life issues they were experiencing in their neighborhood. The information was compiled and the next three months were spent developing and implementing plans designed to rid the community of those issues.

At the beginning of the survey residents of the Trend Tract were asked specific questions in regards to safety in the neighborhood. At the conclusion of the survey there was a significant change in the perception of safety amongst residents in this community.

The following is a portion of the before and after surveys that were conducted and reflects the changes in the perceptions of residents.

At the beginning:                                                                                                           At the conclusion:

Very Safe/Safe                                                                                                 7.4%                                        Very Safe/Safe          85%

Somewhat Safe                                                                                                28.7%                                      Somewhat Safe     15%

Unsafe/Very Unsafe                                                                                          19%                                         Unsafe/Very Unsafe  0%

The C.O.P.S. Team went back to the community and spoke with residents to get a true sense of how successful the operation was. The C.O.P.S. Team reported that residents they spoke with saw a substantial improvement in their community and generally felt safer in their homes and walking their streets.

The Trend Tract area was the third Lancaster community to experience the benefits of this type of target specific operation.
