Blue Whales Sing in Lower Key

No-one really knows why, but over the last 40 years, the song of blue whales has mysteriously grown deeper, according to researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and WhaleAcoustics, a private research company. The global decline as been described by scientists who have reviewed the study as “dramatic,” “significant,” “convincing,” and “unequivocal.”  Does a 30 percent lowering of frequency mean these elusive mammals are growing in population, or is there another answer hiding in the depths?  We ask the experts.

Guests:

Sarah Mesnick, behavioral ecologist at the NOAA Fisheries Serivcie.  She is one of the authors of the study.

Auto Leasing Goes the Way of the Pinto

Last week Chrysler LLC notified its dealers that it will no longer offer auto leases through its lending arm. Yesterday Ford began telling dealers that it is essentially ending leading deals on most trucks and SUV’s, and General Motors is expected to follow suit later this week. Leasing, once used as tool to make higher priced models more affordable to buyers, has been killing Detroit’s Big Three automakers. The financing units of the American auto manufacturers have been piling increasing losses stemming from leases, mainly as a result of falling resale values of trucks, SUV’s and other less fuel-efficient cars.  Even Wells Fargo Auto Financing has cancelled its leasing program—at least now the choice between leasing or buying got a little easier.

Eric Idle’s “Not the Messiah”

“If you will not show us the Grail, we shall take your castle by force!”  Now, English comedian, actor, composer, and author, Eric Idle, is taking on the Hollywood Bowl in his latest rendition of the Monty Python legacy.  In “Not the Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy),” Idle and composer John Du Prez tell the tragic-comic story of a man mistaken for the Messiah, spoofing Handel’s famous oratorio “Messiah” and Monty Python’s “Life of Brian.”  Of course, the storytelling gets a bit out of hand when the LA Phil, the chorus, soloists, bagpipers and sheep get involved.  But “out of hand” has pretty much been the benchmark for Idle’s long, illustrious career. The comedic genius sits down with guest host Jon Beaupre, talking Spamalot, theology, sheep, and the holiest of holies, the Grail.

Guests:

Eric Idle, actor, comedian, composer, author.  Co-creator of "Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy)."
