Veepstakes ’08: The Case for Joe Biden

A Christian conservative?  Someone with experience in U.S. foreign policy?  A woman?  Even with the contenders for the top spot in the White House already set, the guessing game and fuss over the potential vice presidential candidates seem just as intense.  After all, the stakes are high for the VP pick for both Senators McCain and Obama.  The selection could help a candidate win over a swing state or even attract a whole subset of voters.  We continue an on-going series taking a look at each of the potential VP picks for both candidates – and handicap how they could help (or hurt) their party’s ticket.  Next, a look at the veteran Senator from Delaware, Joe Biden.

Robocalls

The baby's crying. The dog's barking. You're trying to cook dinner. And the phone rings. You pick up and what do you hear? A recorded message telling you why you should vote for John McCain or Barack Obama. Infuriating? An invasion of privacy? Illegal? Freedom of speech? Whatever they are, some people are just fed up with automatic marketing or "Robocalls," as they're commonly known. The National Political Do Not Contact Registry is one such group--they're advocating an outright ban. The calls are already illegal in several states and, depending how they're executed, are illegal in California. Yet the laws, as currently written, are all-but impossible to enforce. So how do you silence your phone? Or does freedom of speech trump this annoyance?
