EDITORS’ BACKGROUND: Metro’s Orange Line busway opened in October 2005, and was an instant success, immediately outpacing its initial ridership projections. Since then, the line has proved its continuing popularity with Valley commuters, and a UC Berkeley transportation study even credited the Orange Line with reducing freeway traffic on the Ventura Freeway. Running 14 miles and including 13 stations from Warner Center and North Hollywood, the line was completed on time and under budget, built in less than four years at a lower cost than a single mile of subway.
