CAPOEIRA BATUQUE BRINGS MASTERS OF

AFRO-BRAZILIAN DANCE AND MARTIAL ARTS TO LULA WASHINGTON DANCE THEATRE

Sunday June 29th, 2008 1pm

Los Angeles, CA: Brazilian cultural icon, Capoeira Batuque, brings internationally renowned masters of the acrobatic art of Capoeira to Lula Washington Dance Theatre for an electrifying performance of traditional Afro-Brazilian dance, martial arts, and music.  Hosted by Mestre Amen Santo, the 19th Annual Capoeira Batuque Batizado is a celebration of the Afro-Brazilian art form of Capoeira and includes a performance, special workshops, and a batizado ceremony.

The Capoeira Batuque Batizado will begin with a one-hour performance of traditional Afro-Brazilian dances including Samba, Maculelê, Candomblé, and Capoeira.  The event will be held at The Lula Washington Dance Theatre on 3773 S. Crenshaw Blvd. in Los Angeles .  The dance performance starts at 1pm and costs $10.  General public is also invited to stay for the Capoeira batizado ceremony which begins at 2:30pm.

Capoeira (pronounced ka-poo-eh-da) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that incorporates acrobatics, dance, and music. It's a communal game in which two opponents play inside a circle, formed by other players who create the rhythm by clapping, singing, and playing traditional instruments. Capoeira was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil whose cultural practices combined to become Capoeira. Slaves used Capoeira to escape and resist capture, but concealed its combative purpose through music, song, and dance.

A "batizado" is a graduation ceremony for students who are excelling in Capoeira.  This week-long celebration includes workshops, lectures, and performances by world-renowned masters and culminates in a performance and the batizado ceremony.

Capoeira Batuque is an arts mentorship program led by Mestre Amen Santo at the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center in Culver City .  The mission of the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center is to foster cultural citizenship and community building through arts education.  Capoeira Batuque is focused on producing high quality, accessible, creative opportunities in the Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira, and in multicultural and multi-disciplinary arts.

Mestre Amen Santo was born and raised in Bahia Brazil where he gained mastery of Afro-Brazilian dance including capoeira, candomble, samba, maculele, and related traditions.  In 1989, Santo founded Capoeira Batuque, the longest standing capoeira academy in Southern California . Santo's work in film includes Only the Strong and Kickboxer IV.
