RIDLEY-THOMAS STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR’S

PROPOSAL TO SELL L.A. MEMORIAL COLISEUM

“These are desperate times in the State of California and therefore everything is on the table. There will be good and bad ideas put forth. But before we contemplate disposing of a landmark treasure with a world-renowned signature, proper public stewardship requires careful analysis of the larger potential impacts on the community.  This would include the impact of private ownership and management of any portion of Exposition Park, on our museums, playgrounds, other recreational facilities, and the surrounding community.  I have been an advocate for examining and modernizing the governance structure for the Coliseum.  However, there will be no fire sale of a publicly-owned treasure.  On the other hand, the Sports Arena is another matter. It is not nationally designated landmark and we ought to consider maximizing its potential.”
