SECOND ANNUAL REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN APPRECIATION DAY (RAAD)

Natural History Museum Celebrates the Slimy and Scaly

Sunday, October 3, 10 am – 5 pm

 

 

LOS ANGELES—At the Natural History Museum’s second Reptile and Amphibian Appreciation Day (RAAD), visitors can get to know reptiles and amphibians from around the world and our own backyards.

 

Created by devoted NHM herpetologist, the day’s mission is to raise Museum visitors’ awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the often maligned vertebrate group — reptiles and amphibians. Events include up-close animal encounters, live music (with a nature-themed, family friendly band), art projects, hands-on activities, and plenty of interaction with professional herpetologists and “herp” enthusiasts. Various rescue groups, educational organizations, professional herpetologists, veterinarians and artists will have booths and displays.

 

"The godfather of turtle biology,” Dr. Peter Pritchard, will also be on hand. Pritchard’s a leading voice in chelonian biology and conservation. The charismatic founder of the Chelonian Research Institute, and author of many distinguished publications such as the herpetologist’s staple, Encyclopedia of Turtles, will speak to turtle fans.

NHM Next

This summer’s completed renovation of the Beaux-Arts 1913 Building has set the stage for the Museum’s rollout of new visitor experiences leading up to the Natural History Museum’s centennial in 2013. The re-opening of the 1913 Building began with July’s debut of the exhibition Age of Mammals, and two new installations, What on Earth? and Life Through the Ages: Revisiting the Paintings of Charles R. Knight, inside the iconic Rotunda. In Summer 2011, the Museum will open Dinosaur Mysteries, the highly-anticipated return of a dedicated dinosaur hall. Over 2011 and 2012, the North Campus, a 3.5-acre green space opens with nature experiences and outdoor programming. An exhibition focusing on the Southern California environmental history will open in 2012.
