LOS ANGELES COUNTY CELEBRATES

SEPTEMBER 19-25, 2010 AS ‘EMPLOY OLDER WORKERS WEEK’

Los Angeles County—Los Angeles County will celebrate September 19-25, 2010, as “Employ Older Workers Week” to highlight and promote the importance of recognizing the talents and contributions of this population in keeping California competitive in rapidly changing domestic and global markets.

This week acknowledges the many public and private organizations that actively recruit and employ older workers.  Employers and community leaders are encouraged to consider this labor pool a valuable state resource. Celebrating “Employ Older Workers Week” also serves as an important reminder to older workers that they are a valuable asset in today’s workplace.

Older Americans are living longer and are more active, healthy, and independent than ever before and unprecedented numbers are continuing to thrive in the 21st Century workplace.  According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor report, one in five (20 percent) of all U.S. workers will be 55 or older by 2015.  As the baby boomers reach what has traditionally been “retirement age” with many years of active life expectancy ahead, they are fast becoming an invaluable and sometimes overlooked source of potential labor.

Cynthia Banks, Director of Los Angeles County Community and Senior Services adds, “Older workers are valued for having a good work ethic and for providing experience, knowledge and dependability in the workplace.  It makes good business sense to hire these experienced workers and provide them an opportunity for increased income and greater personal satisfaction that builds stronger communities and benefits all of us.”   Older Workers are encouraged to participate in one or more of the events listed below.

National “Employ Older Workers Week” has been observed in California since 1959.  It is celebrated annually throughout the nation during the last full week in September.
