BELVEDERE PARK USED MOTOR OIL AND OIL FILTER COLLECTION EVENT

September 13, 2010                                                                                                                  No. 14/10

PUBLIC WORKS OFFERS USED MOTOR OIL AND OIL FILTER COLLECTION EVENT

The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works will host an oil collection event at Belvedere Park, 203 North Mednik Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90022, on September 25, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents will receive FREE oil containers, oil filter containers, shop towels, and oil funnels while supplies last, for recycling.

During the last campaign, about 1,300 residents in Los Angeles County recycled 2,500 gallons of used motor oil and 900 used oil filters.

Public Works offers quick, easy steps to prepare used motor oil and oil filters for recycling:

  • Place used oil filter(s) in a plastic bag and seal it.
  • Store used motor oil in a leak-proof container.  Do not mix oil with other liquids or materials, including water.  Mixing liquids contaminates the motor oil, which cannot be recycled.

In addition to this event, residents can drop off used motor oil and oil filters at weekend County sponsored Household Hazardous Waste/Electronic Waste (HHW/E-Waste) collection events or at local Certified Collection Centers. These centers will typically accept up to five gallons of uncontaminated used motor oil, and some will also accept used oil filters for recycling – all free of charge.

Gail Farber, Director of Los Angeles County Public Works, said used motor oil and oil filters can be hazardous if dumped improperly.

"Motor oil poured onto the ground, into storm drains, or tossed in the garbage can contaminate soil, groundwater supplies, streams, and the ocean," Farber said.  "Just one gallon of motor oil can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water – that’s enough water for one year’s supply for 50 people."
