ANTONOVICH SAYS FORMULA FOR ALLOCATING HOMELESS RESOURCES MUST INCLUDE MENTAL HEALTH CARE

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – The Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich to send a 5-signature letter to the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department to include mental illness and substance abuse in its McKinney Vento housing resources funding formula when allocating monies targeting homelessness.

“The fundamental characteristics shared by the homeless population is mental illness and alcohol/substance abuse,” said Antonovich.  “Public resources must be targeted to address this issue for long term results.”

Currently, both mental health and substance abuse are not factors recommended for inclusion in the HUD McKinney Vento housing resources funding formula.
