REGISTRAR-RECORDER/COUNTY CLERK EMPLOYEE HONORED
Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean Logan is pleased to announce that RR/CC employee Edward Sumcad was recently named “Toastmaster of the Year 2009-2010” by the Founder’s District of Toastmasters. Edward was honored during a short ceremony on September 8, 2010 at RR/CC headquarters in Norwalk. The award was presented by past Toastmasters Founder’s District Governor, Maira Pineda.
According to Kris Krishna, Toastmasters Division E Governor, “The Toastmaster of the Year is an award that is given to an individual at the end of the Toastmaster year that effectively supports the mission of the district through dedication, commitment and significant contributions. My personal congratulations to Edward for this well deserved honor and for his support to Division E members!”
Edward, an LA County RR/CC Staff Assistant II for the past 3 years, has been a member of LA County Orators Toastmasters Club since 2008. “As a member of the Toastmasters organization, I saw an opportunity for RR/CC staff to develop and improve skills in leadership and communications, and envisioned the RR/CC having its own Toastmasters club,” said Sumcad. With the support of the Department and the Toastmasters Organization, Edward moved forward and RRCC Toastmasters Club quickly formed in summer of 2009.
The RRCC Toastmasters Club has had huge success thanks to Edward’s leadership. On April 19, 2010, the club was honored as an official “Charter” club allowing the club to become a chartered member club of Toastmasters International. RR/CC Dean Logan said, “I am pleased with the formation of the RRCC Toastmasters club and of hosting weekly lunchtime meetings so that staff can participate. Toastmasters can do a lot in the way of staff development, personal growth and leadership proficiency. The RR/CC is fortunate to have Edward on staff. He displays fine leadership skills not only in his bringing Toastmasters to the RR/CC, but in his efforts to bring other similar programs to the department.”
Edward presently serves as Vice President of Education for RRCC Toastmasters Club. He now seeks to expand RRCC Toastmasters by creating a speech craft series of workshops to develop speaking, competing against other County departments, developing and conducting speech contests, and with other community organizations developing a youth program to create leadership opportunities.”
Edward began community service from a young age. He volunteered for the County at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center from middle school age through college. In high school, he volunteered with South Bay Youth Volunteer Center and in college worked with Make-A-Wish Foundation. Edward says, “Community service, developing partnerships, and creating public value have always been a big thing with me.”
