Los Angeles County

Small Business Commission

At its January 6, 2010, the Los Angeles County Small Business Commission (SBC) elected George Hill as Chair of the Board of Directors and Dennis Young as Vice-Chair.

Mr. Hill was appointed by 3rd District Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky to the Small Business Advisory Board at its inception in 1998; it became a Commission in May, 2001. He is the Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking Advisor, of City National Bank, San Fernando Valley Regional Center. As such, he brings an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the fiscal difficulties facing the small business entrepreneur.

Through his professional background, Commissioner Hill brings a wealth of financial information and Small Business loan information and opportunities to the Commission. He stated “I understand the small business owner’s need for credit and financing and, through the work of the Commission, bring this to the attention of the Board of Supervisors.”

An appointee of 4th District Supervisor Don Knabe, Mr. Young is President and CEO of The Children’s Dental Center in Inglewood. He has served on the Commission since 2001 and looks forward to representing his fellow commissioners in this capacity. 2

Both Mr. Hill and Mr. Young have been a presence and support at the Contracting Connections events held on a rotating basis in each supervisorial district.

One of the ways the Commission assists small businesses is through the Office of Small Business (OSB) and Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) which administers the County’s outreach, education and advocacy program for small business by connecting them with government contract opportunities. Smaller training classes are held in each district of the County, instructing firms on matters such as how to do business with the County, state and federal government; how to take advantage of preference programs specially set for small businesses, how to set up a business, and how to obtain finance.
