Ask the Chief

Chief Charlie Beck returns to talk to Patt and answer your questions about the state of the LAPD.  Major crime saw a 9% drop in LA last year, but in a recent interview Chief Beck said the city’s budget problems already mean fewer police on the streets.  Can this trend in the crime rate continue in a city (and state) constantly in danger of running out of money?  Join Patt in asking Chief Charlie Beck what 2010 holds for the LAPD.

Guests:

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck

Will a California internet sales tax make you proceed to CHECK-OUT?

In times of desperate budget circumstances, desperate measures are needed and the California Legislature appears to be considering just that—turning to the last bastion of tax-free commerce, the State Senate yesterday approved a bill that would impose a sales tax on internet purchases.  Aimed at big online distributors like Amazon and Overstock, that do not maintain brick-and-mortar store fronts in California, the internet sales tax should generate an additional $107 million in revenue.  Democrats in the Senate passed the internet tax as part of a larger tax enforcement bill, and while Gov. Schwarzenegger has previously opposed the tax his mood might change facing yet another $20+ billion budget deficit.  Will your special box-set CD purchase from Amazon soon come with an additional 8.25% sales tax?

Guests:

Ana Matosantos, director of the California Department of Finance

UNCOMFIRMED:

Representatives of Amazon.com and Overstock.com

State Sen. Denise Ducheny, D-40th District; Chair of the Senate Budget & Fiscal Review Committee
