SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT UNVEILS A NEW OCEAN VESSEL AND A
RADIATION-DETECTING HELICOPTER TO ENHANCE PORT SECURITY
WHO: SHERIFF LEE BACA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT; CAPTAIN ROGER LAFERRIERE, UNITED STATES COAST GUARD; SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE ERIK CORTES, UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT; CHIEF RON BOYD, LOS ANGELES PORT POLICE; CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER ED DAVIS, PORT OF LONG BEACH HARBOR PATROL; AND OFFICIALS FROM THE LONG BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT.
WHAT: THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT IS UNVEILING NEW, STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT THAT WILL ENHANCE THE PRE-PORT ENTRY SCREENING PROGRAM. THE EQUIPMENT INCLUDES A 55-FOOT OCEAN-GOING VESSEL, A RADIATION-DETECTING HELICOPTER AND A CHEMICAL-BIOLOGICAL DETECTION CANINE. THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT PARTNERS WITH SEVERAL AGENCIES IN A LAYERED DEFENSE TO ENSURE THE SECURITY OF THE PORT OF LOS ANGELES FROM BOTH CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS AND WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.
