Air Quality Advisory in Effect for Area near Recycling Facility Fire
Visible smoke may affect air quality in area near Slauson and Central
Avenues in South Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES - All individuals working or living near the intersection
of Slauson and Central Avenues in South Los Angeles are urged to avoid
unnecessary outdoor activity where there is visible smoke or the odor of
smoke, due to the recycling facility fire in the area.
"Everyone should avoid any outdoor or indoor exertion or exercise in
smoke-impacted areas," said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of
Public Health and Health Officer. "In areas where smoke may not be
visible, but may still be impacted by this fire, we are advising
sensitive individuals, such as those with heart disease, asthma, or
other respiratory disease, to stay indoors as much as possible."
Staying indoors can help reduce exposure to smoke, especially by
keeping doors and windows closed. Running the air conditioner can also
be helpful by keeping the fresh air intake closed to prevent outdoor air
from coming inside. Residents should check the filters on their air
conditioners and replace them regularly. Indoor air filtration devices
with HEPA filters can further reduce the level of particles that
circulate indoors.
