"Incarcerated Parents Project" holds kick-off event on June 17th

Program strengthens bonds between inmates and children through visitation

 

Friends Outside in Los Angeles County, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, is hosting a kick-off event for the "Incarcerated Parents Project" (IPP) at the Century Regional Detention Center on Thursday, June 17th from 1 to 3 p.m.  The program is designed to introduce community leaders to IPP; explain how the agencies involve facilitate visitation between incarcerated parents and their children and what that looks like.

 

This project is one of very few in the country that promotes family bonds between children of inmates and their incarcerated parents who qualify for services.  The goal is to promote the family reunification services for children in foster care in families with parental incarceration through services that include the following: supervised visitation; assistance to complete case plans with Dependency Court; liaison support between incarcerated parents and their Children's Social Workers; and, supportive services for children and their caregivers.

 

The program will include speakers from Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's office, Friends Outside the Family, DCFS, the Sheriff's Department as well as Maria Santos Angluo, a former incarcerated parent who has successfully reunified with her daughter.

 

There will be a tour of Century Regional Detention Facility immediately following Program.

Tour participants need to be cleared in advance.
