Pearblossom, CA – Janis Damiani was sentenced to prison yesterday after pleading no contest to animal cruelty charges.  Last month the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control arrested Damiani when nearly 100 horses were discovered starving at Equus Sanctuary located in Pearblossom, California.  There was limited available water and no food available on the property.  Most of the horses were in desperate need of medical treatment and care.  Several dogs and cats were also seized from the property – one dog was suffering with a dog collar embedded in its neck.

The Department seized all of these animals and charged the defendant with felony animal cruelty.  Veterinarians had to euthanize more than a dozen horses and are still providing medical care to the others.  “These animals were in desperate need of care” stated Los Angeles County Deputy Director Michelle Roache.  “At the present time, we are rehabilitating these horses and trying to get them into loving homes as soon as possible” she said.

Damiani will serve the next two years and eight months in state prison.

Please contact us at 562-658-2000 if you are interested in adopting or fostering any of these horses.
