ANTONOVICH’S “FAIR SHARE” INITIATIVE PROVIDES EQUITY IN TRANSPORTATION FUNDING

Supervisor’s Plan Ensures County’s Cities and Unincorporated Areas

Receive Fair Share of Future Sales Tax Generated Transportation Funds

LOS ANGELES COUNTY –Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich is proposing a transportation funding initiative for placement on the general election ballot November 4, 2008.

The “Fair Share” initiative allows voters to require that funds generated by any future county-wide transportation sales tax measure be allocated fairly across Los Angeles County’s 88 cities and 134 unincorporated communities.

“County taxpayers deserve to see the tax dollars they generate fund transportation projects in their communities,” said Antonovich.  “The “Fair Share” initiative provides fairness for the 60% of the County’s population that live outside of the City of Los Angeles and generates 67% of County sales taxes.”

On July 24, the MTA will vote on a tax increase measure to place a 30-year, half-cent sales tax on the ballot that would allow the MTA to allocate funding for projects without guarantees of regional fairness.
