BURKE PROCLAIMS THE MONTH OF JULY AS NATIONAL MINORITY MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH


 

SUPERVISOR BURKE JOINS DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND NAMI URBAN LOS ANGELES IN PROCLAIMING JULY AS BEBE MOORE-CAMPBELL NATIONAL MINORITY MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

  

WHAT:            In an effort to bring awareness of critical mental health issues affecting minorities in addition to help eliminate disparities that exist in mental health treatment among ethnic cultures and populations, Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke and Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks will join the Department of Mental Health Acting Chief Deputy Director Dr. Robin Kay, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Urban Los Angeles Executive Director Nancy Carter, and community-based providers in proclaiming the month of July as “National Bebe Moore-Campbell Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in Los Angeles County.”

Bebe Moore-Campbell was the founding member of NAMI Urban Los Angeles. She was the author of a pair of books entitled, “Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry” and “72 Hour Hold.” Both books have made significant contributions in raising awareness of the plight of those with brain disorders. Moore-Campbell’s tireless advocacy and fight to bring attention to mental illness among minorities served as the catalyst for this historic month of recognition.
