El Camino College debate team from Torrance honored for winning the 2008 National Parliamentary Debate Association – Community College National Championship.

 

Members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department honored in recognition of their humanitarian mission to China and Burma.

 

Proposal would extend interim urgency ordinance to temporarily require a conditional use permit in unincorporated area known as Cerritos Island for construction of residential buildings over 26 feet tall and for yard modifications.   (Item 1)  APPROVED

 

Board asked to approve revisions for various Beaches and Harbors fees to cover increased operating costs, including the establishment of the following (Item 5):

·        $30-35 registration fee for kayaking class at Burton Chace Park, as well as equipment rental fees ranging from $10 for four hours to $55 for all day.

·        $17 early check-in fee at Dockweiler RV Park.

·        $50 special event parking fee.  

APPROVED

 

Proposal calls for implementing new/adjusted fees to recover costs incurred by the Fire Department for reviewing/evaluation/processing environmental impact plans for land development projects located within the County.  (Item 6) APPROVED

 

Appeal heard of Regional Planning Commission’s approval to build water distribution facility in unincorporated communities of Sleepy Valley and Agua Dulce.   (Item 9, cont. from 6/24) ANTONOVICH CONT. TO OCT. 28

 

Approval sought to build 84-unit senior citizen/developmentally disabled low-income apartment complex with community center in unincorporated East Compton and City of Compton.  (Item 11) APPROVED 4-0, WITH BURKE ABSTAINING

 

Proposal would extend $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for the murder of Katan Khaimov near Romaine Street and Martel Avenue in Los Angeles on March 9.   (Item 16) APPROVED

 

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich requests support for Countywide initiative that would require  future sales tax increases imposed by MTA to be spent on both regional and subregional transportation projects.   (Item 20) ANTONOVICH CONT. TO AUG. 5

 

Recommendation calls for Nov. 4 ballot measure to validate and reduce the utility users tax in unincorporated areas from 5 percent to 4.5 percent.  (Item 24) APPROVED WITH ANTONOVICH MOTION TO EXEMPT INTERNET SERVICES

 

Supervisors consider report on County’s new governance structure prepared by the Citizens’ Economy and Efficiency Commission.  (Item 25)  INSTRUCTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER TO MEET WITH CHIEF DEPUTIES OF BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND REPORT BACK IN 30 DAYS

 

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky calls for Auditor-Controller’s Office to determine how and when the personnel review process broke down at King-Harbor Medical Center and to report findings and recommendations to the Board within four weeks.  (Item 26-B)  APPROVED

 

Board in closed session discusses lawsuit challenging the County’s approval of the Cemex mining project in Soledad Canyon   (CS-1)                             

 

Board in closed session discusses candidates for the position of auditor-controller.  (CS-5)
