District Attorney hails U.S. Supreme Court decision

LOS ANGELES -- The U.S. Supreme Court Monday in a unanimous 9 to 0 decision by Justice Stephen Breyer in Van de Kamp v. Goldstein held that prosecutors and their supervisors cannot be personally sued because of their policies or training.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley hailed the decision preserving absolute immunity. He noted that the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision was so dangerous to public safety his office sought amicus briefs from prosecutors throughout the country in support of overturning the decision.

"This is a victory for fair-minded prosecutors across the nation," Cooley said.
