PRESS RELEASE
Opening of a New Fishing Pier
At
Whittier Narrows Recreation Area
(South El Monte, CA) – The County of Los Angeles, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy have collaborated in the construction of a new fishing pier for the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area South Lake (also known as Legg Lake), located on the south side of the lake, off of the Durfee parking lot. There are a total of three lakes located within Whittier Narrows Recreation Area: the North Lake, the South Lake (Legg Lake) and the Center Lake.
This new pier is a welcome addition to the facility and will offer park patrons great recreational fishing for many years to come.
The construction of the new fishing pier started in September 2007 and was completed in January 2009, providing access to the lake for recreational fishing. The pier is also ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. A major source of funding for the pier was provided by a Rivers and Mountains Conservancy (RMC) grant in the amount of $500,000.00, funded by voter-approved State bond funds.
Whittier Narrows Recreation Area is located at 750 South Santa Anita Avenue, South
El Monte, CA 91733. For more information, please contact the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area Park Office at (626) 575-5526, or visit the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation website at www.lacountyparks.org
