GIFTS FOR GUNS
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Supervisor Don Knabe, and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas held a press conference today (March 26, 2009) at the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building in Monterey Park. The Gifts for Guns program was developed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2005 and provides a unique opportunity for area residents to safely surrender any firearm, anonymously and without questions, to Sheriff’s personnel in exchange for a $100 gift card (for any handgun or rifle) or a $200 gift card (for an assault weapon). Last year, the Sheriff’s Department collected more than 3,000 guns, which were later destroyed. This program has been very successful and serves as a great means in taking weapons off the streets.
The Sheriff’s Department plans to hold a “Gifts for Guns” event at 21 drive-thru locations over the next couple of months. Starting this Saturday people can drive-thru these locations:
Lynwood City Hall
11330 Bulllis Road, Lynwood California 90262
Norwalk-Registrar Recorder /County Clerk’s Office
(Rear Parking Lot)
12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk California 90650
Antelope Valley Fairgrounds
2000 Block Of Avenue H
Lancaster California 93534
Each weekend three different stations will host the program and for more information on other locations in the upcoming weekends please contact your local Sheriff’s Stations.
