L.A. COUNTY LAUNCHES 8th ANNUAL CESAR CHAVEZ
COMMUNITY SERVICE WEEK TODAY
County Employees Follow Chavez’ Example of Service to Others
“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and
prosperity for our community... Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own." – Cesar Chavez
“Helping and Serving Others” is this year’s theme for the County of Los Angeles’ Eighth Annual Cesar Chavez Community Service Week March 30 to April 3. During this week, County employees will volunteer in the community, and raise food for needy families. On March 31, the day of Chavez’ birthday, Supervisor Gloria Molina will hold a special presentation at the 9:30 a.m. Board of Supervisors meeting at the Hall of Administration, 500 W. Temple Ave., Los Angeles.
To kick-off the County’s Service Week, the East L.A. Library will hold a Cesar Chavez birthday party today with the Trio Monte Carlo from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 4837 E. Third St., Los Angeles.
In response to the Salvation Army’s report of an increase in requests for housing and food from families suffering from the economic downturn, Molina and her staff will a cook meal and serve 200 families at noon at the Salvation Army’s Bell Shelter, 5600 Rickenbacker Rd., in Bell.
“During these difficult economic times, our families and communities are leaning on the County family now more than ever. And, we are pleased to continue our annual tradition of volunteering instead of taking a paid holiday.” said Molina. “I also encourage Los Angeles County residents to join us by finding ways in which to help others in need or to volunteer in their communities.”
Last year L.A. County employees donated a total of 23,000 pounds of food through the Chavez Week food drive in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, with collection of food items at 234 sites.
