$1.25M ENFORCEMENT AND EDUCATION FOR CONTRAT CITIES GRANT

Driving under the influence (DUI) is a significant problem that affects every community. DUI collisions resulting in death, injuries, and property damage are pervasive around the nation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) will be vigorously enforcing DUI related laws in the 40 contract cities.
The additional law enforcement services will be provided to the cities at no additional cost. The Department sought and received a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety in the amount of $1.25M, dedicated to DUI enforcement and education. This grant will be in effect for the upcoming Federal Fiscal Year (October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010).
The grant will be managed by Sergeant John Burcher and Deputy Aaron Percy of LASD’s Risk Management Bureau’s DUI Education and Enforcement Program. Captain Dave Long, of the Risk Management Bureau, has made DUI enforcement a top priority.
“Make no mistake. Our message is clear and simple. If we catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions, no excuses. We continue to see too many people suffer from the loss of loved ones or debilitating injuries as a result of impaired driving. This behavior is irresponsible, is a danger to the community, and it must be stopped. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is dedicated to arresting impaired drivers wherever and whenever we find them,” said Captain Long.
Several DUI enforcement operations and educational campaigns will be hosted through the grant. CDL/DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols (targeting DUI and traffic violations), a variety of school education programs, and training for patrol deputies are just a few examples.
This grant will begin in the start of the Federal Fiscal year, October 1st, 2009. All of the contract cities will be beneficiaries of these operations. DUI is a wide spread problem, and it will take vigorous enforcement and education to mitigate these incidents.
The financial consequence of a DUI arrest or crash can be very significant. Violators often face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, increased insurance rates, attorney fees, time away from work, and countless other expenses. “Driving impaired is simply not worth the risk. Don’t take the chance. Remember, if my deputies find you driving impaired, then you will be arrested,” said Captain Long.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
