Healthcare: Safeway’s “wellness” model

Putting aside for a moment how we get there, a majority of Americans say they’re in favor of universal healthcare coverage. But what if you eat healthy, exercise, and don’t smoke? Should you pay the same as someone who doesn’t take care of themselves, smokes, and eats unhealthy foods? Safeway Inc. says no: penalize with higher rates those who choose to smoke and eat unhealthy foods, but encourage healthy habits by writing a check to those who lose weight or kick smoking. Is this is win-win model or a nefarious way for scooting individuals out the insurance door?

Robert Zirkelback, spokesperson for America’s Health Insurance Plans, a *** group
