Water bottles everywhere, but should you take a drink? Our obsession with bottled war

Our love for bottled water is becoming an unhealthy obsession, for both people and the environment.  Kids are getting more cavities because they’re not drinking the fluoride-enriched tap water.  Landfills, oceans and sidewalks house the millions of bottles used once and thrown out.  Companies market tap water as ‘poison.’  But why this sudden war on tap?  Is it really that bad for us compared to all the chemicals leaching from the plastic into your precious bottled water?  Water expert Peter H. Gleick exposes the evil behind the fancy veil of bottled water.

Guest:

Peter H. Gleick, president and co-founder of the Pacific Institute; recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Award” for his work with water resources; author of the biennial report “The World’s Water” and editor of “Water in Crisis: a guide to the world’s fresh water resources”

The virus-like tendencies of divorce: new studies show how splitting up may be contagious

Divorce, the once taboo marital act, has become more prevalent and mainstream over the last 50 years.  But is it contagious?  Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, Brown University and Harvard University seem to think so.  ‘Divorce clustering,’ as it’s called, creates a domino effect, as you begin to question your marriage as friends and siblings break up with their spouses.  Can it be that your choice to end your marriage can influence your friends just as your choice to buy a new car or purse can?  The study finds that if someone you know gets divorced, you’re 75 percent more likely to break up with your spouse.  Can the influence of these degrees of separation actually lead to… separation?

Guest:

James H. Fowler, professor of political science at UCSD, specializing in social networks and genopolitics and fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation; author of “Connected: the surprising power of our social networks and how they shape our lives”;

CALL HIM:

  • Fowler and two researchers from Harvard and Brown have been studying divorce and social contagion for over a year.

Let them eat (trendy, pricey & savory(?)) cupcakes……..

A cupcake, of course! And they’ve taken over the planet.  There are more cupcake shops popping up than bakeries and it seems everyone has their favorite—Sprinkles, Susi Cakes, Crumbs, and Magnolia (the New York favorite soon to open in LA) to name a few (but who can keep track?).  Oy vey!  Is this trend over already? My pants are getting tighter just reading this.  “No!” says the founder of Sprinkles, and the woman credited with starting the cupcake craze.  She says the sugary little buggers have just hit their stride.   Apparently some one has created a tobacco cupcake.  Say what?  Yeah, I think we’ve reached a plateau.
