Congress ready to party like it’s 1994—reliving the battles between Clinton & House Republicans

In 1994 Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the president of South Africa, people were listening to Hootie and the Blowfish without a sense of irony, Nancy Kerrigan’s knee still hurt and the Republicans took back control of the House after 40 years as the minority, triggering an onslaught of subpoenas of the Clinton administration. Sixteen Novembers later, President Obama finds himself sitting in a seat warmed by many of the presidents that came before him – the hot seat. Obama pledged transparency but is this administration truly prepared for the level of scrutiny that comes with massive investigations? Incoming chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa, has made it clear that he isn’t focused on bringing this president down and in fact also plans to investigate George W. Bush, but Issa isn’t shy about the fact that everyone is under the microscope – maybe it is time to lawyer up. We take a blast from the past look at the future.

Overconsumed America:  are we big, fat, gluttonous jerks?

The supersize meal; the Hummer; 80-inch plasma TV’s; our waistlines—when Americans go big, we go really big and we go big a lot.  A professor at Southern Connecticut State University had been doing research on the consumption habits of Americans and started to connect the psychological dots between our addiction to consumption and the American dream.  The professor built up so much research on the subject that she spun it into a course, “The Psychology of Overconsumption,” which is being offered for the first time this fall.  From workaholics to the intense pursuit of the American dream, and the phenomena of hoarding and addictions, Americans seem addicted to overdoing it.  We’ll all take a turn in Overconsumption 101 and ask ourselves if we’re just consuming too much.
