July 14 Agenda Highlights

Two Parks and Recreation Department employees honored for heroic efforts during recent  medical emergency. 

 

Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Michael D. Antonovich propose requiring vending machines in County facilities, other than Sheriff’s custody facilities, offer only healthy food, with report back in 60 days on extending the requirement to all County-sponsored events and procurement.  (Item 2, cont. from 7/7)

 

Motion encourages County departments to participate in Aug. 11-18 event at the Forum in Inglewood that will provide free medical, dental and vision care to residents – the first time the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps has brought its program to the Los Angeles area.  (Item 4)

 

$4.4 million in grants proposed for 153 arts organizations to fund education programs, concerts, theater productions and operation costs.  (Item 14)

 

Policy change would extend criminal history check of top-level County job applicants to include federal crimes and study feasibility of  also including other employees, contractors and vendors. (Item 17)

 

Approval sought to construct an equestrian facility and riding academy in Agua Dulce to provide therapeutic programs for disabled and special needs children.  (Item 18)

 

Action would establish multi-county system to expedite the electronic recording of real property documents.  (Item 19)

 

Ordinance would require persons and businesses receiving County contracts to certify they have no unpaid property tax bills.  (Items 21, 39, cont. from 6/30, 7/7)

 

Proposal calls for spending $1.4 million to refurbish the community center and replace the tennis courts at Athens Park in Los Angeles.  (Items 29, 30)

 

Recommendation would allow spending additional $149,167 on reconstruction of freeway interchange at Interstate 5/Hasley Canyon Road for temporary street lights and wall modifications, bringing total budget to $33.6 million.  (Item 31)

 

Board asked to authorize feasibility study to analyze City of Brea’s request to contract with County for fire protection/related services.  (Item 33)

 

 $184,000 settlement proposed in lawsuit filed by Fire Department employee Gregory Davis alleging disability discrimination and retaliation. (Item 36)

 

$250,000 settlement proposed in lawsuit seeking compensation for death of  inmate who was likely stabbed when a Sheriff’s employee inadvertently opened multiple jail cell doors simultaneously, allowing several inmates to fight.  (Item 37)

 

Report scheduled on the status of the state budget situation and the impact of issuing IOUs.   (Item 40)
