ANTONOVICH SUPPORTS “GREEN” BATTERY FACTORY

GRANT IN PALMDALE

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – To promote clean energy and create jobs in Los Angeles County, a motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich supporting the construction of a new state-of-the-art lithium ion battery manufacturing plant in Palmdale will be on Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting agenda.

“The Antelope Valley is becoming the nation’s new center for green technology,” said Antonovich.  “When built, more than 400 new jobs will be created -- and upon completion in 2012, another 2,360 long-term skilled manufacturing and installation jobs will be created for Los Angeles County.”

Quallion LLC, is the largest U.S. manufacturer of customized high-quality lithium batteries used for medical, military, aerospace, and vehicle applications.  The company estimates that  with this grant funding, the proposed facility could produce more than 20,000 zero emission advanced lithium ion batteries for automobiles and trucks every year – and further federal goals to have one million plug-in hybrid cars on the road by 2015.

The motion directs the Chief Executive Officer to send a five-signature letter to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, in support of Quallion and their request for Department of Energy grant.
