MOLINA WARNS  THAT FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL IN UNICORPORATED AREAS

Fireworks Hotline, (888) 654-FIRE (3473) – For Local Licensed Pyrotechnic Shows

LOS ANGELES COUNTY (July 2, 2009) – Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina reminds the public that fireworks are not permitted in the unincorporated county areas, and encourages families to celebrate the Fourth of July Holiday at a fireworks show by a State-licensed pyrotechnician -- instead of illegally lighting fireworks in unpermitted communities.

Molina said, “Each year thousands of people, many of them children, are burned, blinded, and even disfigured by fireworks. In addition, fireworks cause fires that cost millions of dollars in property loss and cost the county thousands of dollars in fire service protection and public safety enforcement.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department has activated suppression teams throughout the county’s unincorporated areas who along with regular patrol deputies, are taking a zero tolerance stance and will enforcing all County and State Fireworks laws before and during the Fourth of July holiday.

Per the Los Angeles County Fire Code (LACC 3301.1.3), it is illegal to store, manufacture, sell, use, or handle ALL FORMS of fireworks in unincorporated Los Angeles County.

Per State law, the use of fireworks in unincorporated L.A. is a violation of local and State laws, and violators will can be charged with a felony or misdemeanor and fined up to $500 in fines and/or a year in jail.   To report illegal fireworks, residents should contact their local sheriff or fire department.

A July 4 Fireworks Spectacular featuring John Fogerty with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by John Morris Russell will be held at the Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Ave.   Also, the Fairplex in Pomona is featuring a Fireworks Spectacular, 1101 W. McKinley Avenue, 91768.

For a complete listing of other local firework shows conducted by State-licensed pyrotechnicians, or further information, contact the L.A. County Fire Department’s FIREWORKS HOTLINE at (888) 654-FIRE (3473).
