BOARD APPROVES RIDLEY-THOMAS MOTION TO EXPEDITE

DESIGN SERVICES ON NEW MLK HOSPITAL CAMPUS

LOS ANGELES – On a motion by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, the Board of Supervisors today awarded a new contract to expedite design services for the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center Inpatient Tower Renovation Project and Multiservice Ambulatory Care Center.

The action was consistent with the Board’s previous direction to the Department of Public Works to preserve the County’s eligibility for $56 million in federal stimulus funds. It gives the County an extra month to aggressively seek the federal funds.

“These funds are critical to support our efforts to build a new hospital and updated facilities on the MLK campus to provide quality care,” Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said.

Today’s Board action rescinded a supplemental agreement with HMC Architects to provide complete design services -- including preparation of plans and specifications -- for the Inpatient Tower Renovation Project and scoping documents for the Multiservice Ambulatory Care Center/Ancillary Building Project for a sum not to exceed $17,612,500.

The Board motion authorizes the Department of Public Works to execute a new agreement with HMC Architects for similar services for a sum not to exceed $18,950,000.

In addition to the Inpatient Tower and Ambulatory Care Center, the new campus will include the 30,000 square foot South Health Center and the Health Career Academy.
