Vice President Al Gore with "Our Choice:  A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis"

"It is now abundantly clear that we have at our fingertips all of the tools we need to solve the climate crisis. The only missing ingredient is collective will… Our Choice gathers in one place all of the most effective solutions that are available now and that, together, will solve this crisis. It is meant to depoliticize the issue as much as possible and inspire readers to take action—not only on an individual basis but as participants in the political processes by which every country, and the world as a whole, makes the choice that now confronts us. There is an old African proverb that says, "If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." We have to go far, quickly."

—AL GORE, from the introduction

Are L.A.’s medical pot club up in smoke?

The Los Angeles City Council has begun debating new rules and regulations governing the city’s estimated 800 medical marijuana clubs, which could result in most of them being shut down.  Much more stringent guidelines for operating a pot club are on the table, and L.A. City’s attorney has already threatened to close as many as possible.  Meanwhile the American Medical Association has recommended that marijuana be removed from the Schedule 1 classification of hardcore drugs.  What’s the future of pot in L.A.?

Will California’s rising (water) tide lift all states?

While California is certainly the biggest and most complicated state facing drought and water management issues, it’s not the only state in the Western U.S. that’s trying to come up with creative solutions to water shortages.  Moreover, our hydrological fate is tied to states like Colorado and Arizona and how they manage resources like the Colorado River, a major source of drinking water for Southern California.  The federal government is slowly wading into the water debate and we hear how they plan to referee the latest water wrestling match.

Googled: The End of the World as We Know It!

Not since the printing press has any device changed the world as much as Google has; it’s omnipresent, it’s revolutionized our society and it’s still growing. But despite its prevalence, little is known about the inner workings of the media behemoth and what territory it plans to conquer after subsuming the city of L.A.’s email system. Author Ken Auletta talks with Patt about his all-access look inside Google and the future of cloud computing.
