Antidepressants – more than a mood changer?

According to the state effect hypothesis personality changes that occur while taking anti-depressants are merely a result of alleviating depressive symptoms, but what if that change ran deeper? A report in the December issue of Archives of General Psychiatry states that the bio-chemical properties of at least one common anti-depressant may actually be producing real personality changes.

Taking the veneer off of cosmetic dentistry:  whiter teeth for everyone!

These used to be procedures reserved for the rich and famous:  sparkling white smiles, veneers to fix broken teeth and even gum “contouring.”  Cosmetic dentistry has now become affordable enough to be available to a majority of middle class Americans, and the number of dentists willing to provide these services has exploded accordingly.  But are dentists still operating with the best interests of their clients teeth?  While your teeth might be whiter, are they healthier?

Gourmet’s shuttered, but Ruth Reichl is still dishing it up in the kitchen

For nearly 60 years, that flagship foodie magazine Gourmet elevated and educated American palates, but this Thanksgiving was its swan song. Patt catches up with former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl, on saying goodbye to the magazine, what she’s up to next, and what she’s cooking up this holiday season.

Guest:

Ruth Reichl (RYE-chul), former editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine; she’s also the editor of "Gourmet Today: More than 1000 All-New Recipes for the Contemporary Kitchen” and author of “Not Becoming My Mother: and Other Things She Taught Me along the Way”

A good man is hard to find

What does it mean to “be a man” in America today? That’s the question Tom Matlack posed to Pulitzer winners and Poet Laureates to ex-cons, yogis, Pro Football Hall of Famers and just everyday guys. Their experiences, from their defining challenges to their losses and triumphs, are collected in Matlack’s new book, and he’s hoping it will spark conversations—on the street, subway and around the dinner table—about what about what it means to be a good man today.

Guest:

Tom Matlack, co-editor of “The Good men project: real stories from the front lines of modern manhood”
