Heavy Rains --Be prepared

National Weather Service Forecast

Heavy Rains throughout Los Angeles County

which includes recent fire ravaged areas

With the recent fires which burned near bordering areas of Los Angeles County, such as the Sylmar Fire in the City of Los Angeles and Diamond Bar near Orange County, it is important to remain alert of the inherent dangers caused by heavy rainfall following major wildland fires.

Listed below are preventive measures you can take to prepare before and during the rainfall:

Before the Storm

·         Look for potential storm-water drainage or ground assessment near your home or business

·         Develop your own emergency escape plan for your home or business

·         Obtain sandbags from local fire station to provide water or mud diversion, and construct walls using no more than 25 bags

·         Clear trash and debris from drainage areas to avoid clogging

During a Storm

·         Listen to local radio and TV reports for heavy rainfall areas

·         Be aware of intense burst and extensive rainfall

·         If you live near a stream or channel be alert for sudden increases or decreases of water levels. Changes from clear to muddy waters may be an indicator of debris flow upstream

·         If you live in an area that is susceptible to flooding or debris flow consider leaving if it is safe to do so

·         Be aware of your surroundings, listen for unusual sounds, such as, breaking trees or signs of debris

·         If you are driving, watch the road for collapsed pavement, mud, fallen rocks, and other indications of debris flow

“Empty” sandbags are available at all Los Angeles County Fire stations.  It is important to know that some stations may not have sand at the same location, but will have bag filling locations available.
