The Women's Crusade

Gendercide - think about that word. It is believed that more girls and women are missing from the planet, because they are female, than all the men killed on battlefields in wars of the 20th century. For the women who survive, abuse and mistreatment can be brutal. In their new book, "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide," husband and wife team Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn chronicle the oppression of women. They join Patt for a discussion of these numbing global statistics and the story behind them.

They are husband and wife Pulitzer Prize winners for their coverage of Tiananmen Square for The Times.  Their new book is "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,"  They are also introducing a special "Half the Sky" contest, soliciting testimonials from readers about their experiences with assisting women in the developing world.

Bad Guys, Beware:  Dan Rather’s Still on the Beat

While his ongoing lawsuit against CBS over his dismissal might grab the main headlines, reporting legend and icon Dan Rather is still hard at work breaking stories.  Working for the new HDNet channel, his new investigative program “Dan Rather Reports” looks into money laundering by Iran’s regime, involving a very prominent Western bank.  Patt talks Iran, and the state of the news business, with Dan Rather.
