Packing it out, for the last time? 100 state parks due to close

Governor Schwarzenegger is considering closing as many as one hundred state parks to fill a 24 billion dollar hole in the state budget. If he does, it will be the first time a governor has had to close a park due to budgetary issues in the 108-year history of the park system.  Some say closing state parks will cost taxpayers more that it will save.  There are a plethora of potential legal issues that could end up costing the state millions.  What to do, what to do?

  • The state could be held liable if trespassers enter the park and are injured or start a fire.
  • The state could be on the hook for breach of contract by private companies who offer concession services (they made 89 million in gross sales last year).
  • If the state blocks public beach access it could be held in violation of the California Coastal Act.
  • The state could face fines under the Endangered Species Act if poachers come on to unpatrolled state property and kill endangered salmon, condors or other animals.

Guests:

Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-6th District (Marin, Sonoma); Chair, CA State Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife
