STATION FIRE UPDATE
(Shelters, Evacuations, Community Meeting, School and Road Closures)
For Immediate Release
LOS ANGELES (Thurs., Sept. 3, 2009 – 11:00 a.m.) – The Station Fire started off of Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2) about one mile above Angeles Crest Fire Station around 3:30 p.m., Wed., Aug. 26. Los Angeles County Fire reported that this fire has burned 144,743 acres (that area encompasses 226 square miles) and is 38 percent contained as of 8 a.m., Thur., Sept. 3. Approximately 10,000 residences are threatened at this time (500 commercial structures and 2000 outbuildings). Over 4,735 personnel are working the fire. 12 Helitankers, 7 helicopters, 11 air tankers (including the DC-10, the 747 and the Martin Mars), 433 Engines, 107 hand crews, and 60 dozers are all working the fire. 64 residences and recreational cabins have been confirmed as destroyed along with 3 commercial and 27 others. The Station Fire continues to actively burn within the Angeles National Forest and near surrounding foothill communities of La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Acton, Soledad Canyon, Pasadena, Glendale and Sierra Madre. The fire is moving into areas of the forest with no recorded fire history. To date, helicopters have dropped 1.7 million gallons of water and 18,000 gallons of retardant. Air tankers have dropped 670,000 gallons of retardant and gel.
Two Los Angeles County firefighters were killed Sun., Aug. 30, as they were fighting the Station Fire.
Six injures have been reported. Law enforcement and Fire personnel are urging residents in the area to be ready to evacuate if you are near the fire boundary. Do not hesitate to move to a designated evacuation center.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger toured the burned area this morning, Thur., Sept. 3.
The Governor proclaimed a state of emergency for Los Angeles County on Aug. 28. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors proclaimed a local emergency, Tuesday, September 1, due to the various wildfires.

Health Advisory:
Los Angeles Department of Public Health has issued a hazardous air quality advisory. Poor air quality is rapidly becoming a concern due to falling ash and potentially toxic smoke from burned materials. Health advisories and other public health information can be found at http://www.lapublichealth.org/. Extreme heat continues to be a problem. Residents are urged to stay indoors if at all possible. A list of cooling centers operated by L.A. County can be found at:

Power Advisory:
Southern California Edison urges its customers in the Santa Clarita, Lancaster and Palmdale areas to conserve energy due to transmission lines that have been damaged by the Station Fire. Edison officials asked customers to turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive electronics.
Customers are advised to keep flashlights handy in case a service interruption occurs, not to use candles for lighting because they could pose a fire hazard, and not to cook indoors with charcoal or other fossil fuels not meant for indoor use because they could turn deadly.
If a power outage occurs, one light switch should be left in the on position to serve as a signal when service has been restored.
