BACKGROUND: Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Gloria Molina will kick-start the third phase of her “Green Bag for a Clean Earth” initiative to enlist a new generation of “Earth Defenders” to reduce their use of plastic bags—which notoriously pollute our waterways and overload our landfills. East L.A. students will get a visit from The Bag Monster and receive “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse” prize cards. Those who amass the most stickers on it from March 18 to May 18 each time they or their parent shops with a canvas bag instead of a plastic bag at local El Super, Super A Foods, Superior Grocers, or Top Value Mart grocery stores will receive prizes. Teachers representing classrooms with the top prize card utilization rates from each of the ten participating school districts will win a $100 gift card. (In the Summer of 2009, Supervisor Molina began the first phase of this effort with over 1,450 Florence-Firestone students who prevented approximately 4,000 plastic bags from heading straight to the garbage. In the Fall of 2009, Supervisor Molina started the second phase with over 3,800 Valinda students who saved close to 7,000 plastic bags from the trash.
