MEDIA ADVISORY

Family preservation agency helps keep DCFS families intact

San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center provides a wide array of services supporting family reunification

What:

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), West San Fernando Valley Office, will host an open-house reception as part of L.A. County's week-long Family Reunification Week celebration.  DCFS staff and community partners will celebrate with families that have successfully and safely reunified with their children.  DCFS contracts with family preservation agencies such as The San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center which services the San Fernando Valley.  Representatives from their agency will be on hand to discuss their comprehensive approach to strengthening and preserving families with the goal of assuring the emotional, social, educational and physical well-being of children in a safe and nurturing environment. Treatment services provided include:  in-home visitation/counseling, parent training, self-help/family support groups teaching and demonstrating homemaking, child-focused activities, substitute role model and therapeutic day treatment.

Who:

Shallyne Sarkissian, a 32-year old Armenian mother, battled years of substance abuse before reunifying with her daughter with the support of the San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center.  Today, Shallyne remains sober, employed and most importantly, enjoys a wonderful relationship with her daughter.

Francis Flan, a 33-year old mother of 6 will discuss how domestic violence resulted in her children being removed from her care.  The San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center supported her to regain custody of her children, provided therapeutic services and improved her parenting skills.  Recently, her children were recognized by their schools for outstanding improvement.
