Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s Toxic America

It seems that everyday we hear about some new product or chemical that is slowly poisoning us to death. Next week, CNN's chief medical correspondent and neurosurgeon, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, presents a two-part special investigation into toxic chemicals and public health, focusing on a small town in Louisiana where residents experience clusters of cancers, kidney and respiratory problems that they claim are caused by nearby plastics factories. And yet, two “granny Erin Brockovich” women at the center of this issue are fighting back against industry and government. Dr. Gupta is here with the story.

PATT: Toxic Towns, the documentary, will air on CNN Wednesday, June 2nd. On Thursday, June 3rd, Dr. Gupta will anchor a live discussion called Toxic Childhood, with experts in the science of toxic risk in foods, plastics and other common household items. Both programs air at 8pm Eastern time.

Guest:

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent and a practicing neurosurgeon

Merchants of doubt: how a handful of scientists obscured the truth on issues from tobacco smoke to global warming

After global warming became mainstream fodder for political debate and the Prius became the celebrity vehicle of choice, scientists joined the anti-global warming campaign, and published a handful of scientific reports about human’s effect on the Earth’s climate.  But along came the spider of a well-established group of scientists, who planted the seed of doubt in the public mind about climate change.  Is global warming just a liberal ploy or a made-up Hollywood phenomenon à la “The Day After Tomorrow”?  Science historians Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway expose the politically-rooted discord amongst scientists about global warming in their new book, “Merchants of doubt: how a handful of scientists obscured the truth on issues from tobacco smoke to global warming.” Patt talks with Oreskes and Conway about this dirty, inconvenient truth and how these same scientific advisers continually distort the link between human actions and adverse environmental changes.

PATT MORRISON SCHEDULE

Monday, May 31, 2010

1-3 p.m.

1:00 – 1:40

Female veterans: America’s forgotten daughters

Approximately 11% of the United States military is female and as that number increases, so does the need for tailored services for women returning from battle.  President Obama recently signed the Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act but will that expand the Office of Veterans Affairs (VA) enough to handle the growing cases of Military Sexual Trauma (MST), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the challenges of a diagnosis for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), as well as the other host of issues a soldier faces when reintegrating to a society with a harrowing jobless rate?  Today we discuss the unique problems that face female veterans and what the government is and is not doing to help them.

Guests:

Assistant Secretary Tammy Duckworth, Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs

Jennifer Hunt, two-tour Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and Project Coordinator for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans for America

  • During her tour of Iraq she received a Purple Heart for sustaining shrapnel wounds and electrical burns when a roadside bomb struck her vehicle. In Afghanistan she earned her Combat Action Badge during enemy activities against the Zabol Provincial Reconstruction Team.
  • Jennifer testified in front of the House Veterans Affairs Committee at the Military Sexual Trauma hearing last week “Healing the Wounds: Evaluating Military Sexual Trauma”

Diane West, ADVANCE Women’s Project Coordinator at the U.S. VETS Long Beach site

  • ADVANCE Women’s Program is a 50 bed residential program for female veterans offering a comprehensive program for unemployed homeless women, and specialized sexual trauma treatment
  • Nearly 100 women are provided housing, employment assistance and sexual trauma counseling in the ADVANCE women’s program

Tim O’Brien’s – The Things They Carried

Twenty years ago, years after returning home from his tour in Viet Nam, Tim O’Brien authored a book of short stories about a drastically unpopular war. Considered by many, to be the fiction counterpart to Michael Herr’s Dispatches O’Brien’s fictional account of Viet Nam serves as essential reading on the Viet Nam experience. As America finds itself deep into two wars Tim O’Brien joins us to discuss the “story truth” and “happening truth” of what his book says about where we were then and were we find ourselves now.

Could the once unthinkable be possible? Progress in the prevention & treatment of cancer

It’s been 40 years since President Richard Nixon declared a war on cancer.  And yet, 40 years later, cancer remains with us.   The goal is still the same—to transform the disease into a curable or at least manageable chronic disease, but the methods of treatment are rapidly changing.  From a possible vaccine to various immunotherapies, the treatments are radically different and ever-changing, as an unprecedented new wave of candidates show real promise against cancer.  And it’s not just a cure for cancer that is close but the very prevention of a disease that takes on so many forms.  Patt checks in for the latest developments with two leaders in the field.

Panelists:

Suzanne Topalian, processor of Surgery and Oncology, Johns Hopkins University; Director, Melanoma Program, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center; Chief Science Officer, Melanoma Research Alliance

Andrew von Eschenbach, Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives, Center for Health Transformation; former Commissioner, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

2:30 – 2:40

The quest to treat and prevent Alzheimer’s disease

Can’t remember where you put your keys, forgot to take your morning vitamin, could it be early on-set Alzheimer’s? Maybe, the disease affects 13 percent of people over the age of 64, and 40 percent of those over the age of 85 in the United States. The cost to treat it is more than $148 billion each year. The Alzheimer Association is calling for a “Man on the Moon” plan--a national program to address the disease and its detrimental affects on society, including the increasing financial burden on Medicare and Medicaid.  So, will the U.S devise a plan now to prevent a disease that affects so many families and crippled a former President, or pay more later?

Guest:
Greg Simon, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Policy at Pfizer Inc. He also served as chief domestic policy advisor to Vice President Al Gore.

- Simon leads a global team of professionals in worldwide government, science, economic policy and research, and international policy.

What’s does the BP spill mean, from the Gulf of Mexico to California?

Yesterday President Obama announced the results of his administration’s safety review of offshore drilling and extended a moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits for another six months while a commission investigates the causes of the April 20th accident.  That moratorium will stave off controversial lease-sales off the coast of Alaska, the Western Gulf and Virginia, but how will it affect drilling sites off the California coast, such as the Venoco drilling plan up for vote on the June 8th ballot in Carpentaria? And do President Obama’s announcements yesterday herald a sea-change in the administration’s stance on offshore drilling?

Comedy Congress from the Crawford Family Forum!

The comedic material emanating from Washington D.C., and state capitols across the country, is enough to make any sitcom writer jealous, even if most of that comedy is unintentional.  Our motto on Comedy Congress is that just when politics makes you want to cry, it’s usually best to laugh.  Today we laugh at the asinine politics and blame game surrounding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we laugh at a Republican who thinks the Civil Rights Act was a bad idea and a Democrat who pretended to serve in Vietnam, and much more.  Tomorrow we’ll probably cry about our lost jobs, but today join us in laughing at the madness of it all—the truth hurts far less when it’s told by comedians.

News Advisory

AUDIT OF RESERVE FORCES BUREAU COMPLETE:

RESULTS CALL FOR RETRAINING OF SOME RESERVES

A Statement from Sheriff Lee Baca: The Executive Offices for the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) provided me with the audit report of the Sheriff’s Department’s training of the reserve peace officer program.

The majority of the audit focuses on what is known as a Level III Reserve Deputy Sheriff, who is trained as a peace officer with limited authority and is required to work in support positions under the direct supervision of a fully trained, paid deputy sheriff. Moreover, reserve deputy sheriffs are volunteers who are paid one dollar a year.

The audit revealed good and bad leadership on the part of the Sheriff’s Department. The good is that the Department recruited 99 sincere and patriotic men and women who were willing to sacrifice time, money and energy to become a member of the public safety community.

The bad is the Sheriff’s Department failed to certify with P.O.S.T. the training locations, provide an account for the training in a proper manner, and uphold the high standards expected by P.O.S.T., as well as the Sheriff’s Department.

The good is, while working closely with P.O.S.T. officials, the Sheriff’s Department has corrected the errors and will proceed to retrain those individuals who are presently not eligible and certified to be level III peace officers.

Moreover, during the Sheriff’s Department’s lapse of performance, each recruit did their best, and the audit focused on the Department’s failures. The Sheriff’s Department, in correcting its errors with the help of P.O.S.T., commenced a new class of level III reserves in January 2010, which graduated March 10, 2010. All training and certification requirements were followed, and will continue to be followed hereafter.

It is my hope that this retraining of affected individuals will be understood and welcomed by them.

Furthermore, I want to apologize to the men and women who sincerely worked hard to serve the people of Los Angeles County as a reserve member of the Sheriff’s Department.
