EDITORS BACKGROUND:

The Juvenile Day Reporting Center (JDRC) offers a community-based alternative for:

moderate-to high risk youth aged 14-18 who are facing removal from home due to a

new offense or probation violations. This new approach provides a constructive alternative to detaining them in placement.  As the first Day Reporting Center of its kind for youth in the County, we hope to replicate it successfully throughout the region.

The effort will comprise a 10 week - 30 session afterschool program from 4-7 pm, with youthful attendees transported from home to the JDRC and back by Probation staff. The program’s four basic components involve teaching pro-social skills, literacy, parenting skills to teach parents how to work with kids to change destructive behaviors, and partnerships with community-based non-profits offering services to address employment, substance abuse, life skills and family support issues.
