The Pill – that most revolutionary of inventions – turns 50

What’s small and round and one of the history’s most revolutionary inventions?  The birth control pill has been both praised as the paramount moment in the feminist movement and assailed as a free pass that has actually hurt women’s rights.  Did the pill allow women to put off pregnancy, get further in their careers and get married on their own terms or did it help to promote promiscuity, failed marriages and STD’s? The birth control pill turns 50 years old this month, and feminist founder Gloria Steinem assesses its impact. We’d like to know what The Pill means to you.

  • Ms. Steinem is being honored tonight with the Feminist Majority Foundation Global Women’s Rights Award.
  • The Campaign for Equality is also being honored tonight at the Feminist Majority Foundation awards.

Guests:

Gloria Steinem, founding editor of Ms. Magazine. She continues to speak out against such global injustices as female genital cutting, sex trafficking, honor killings and U.S. restrictions on international family planning.

CALL HER:

  • A co-founder of New York magazine in 1968, Steinem was always active in a wide array of political and social causes. She became a major feminist leader in the late 1960s and in 1971 co-founded Ms. Magazine, where she serves as contributing editor today.

Esha Momeni (EHSH-ah, moh-MAY-nee), CSUN graduate student who was arrested in Tehran in October of 2008 for taping interviews with members of the Campaign for Equality.

CALL HER:

  • She was held in solitary confinement for 25 days and detained by the Iranian government until August of 2009.
  • The Campaign for Equality, an Iranian women's rights initiative launched in 2006, is committed to ending discrimination against women in Iranian law. Several activists have been arrested or tried for activities which are entirely legal, such as organizing peaceful gatherings and educational workshops, and petitioning for legislative change.

City Controller Wendy Greuel chases the money

Los Angeles can’t find nearly a million dollars worth of equipment it bought.  It didn’t all just walk away – did it?  While L.A.’s government was busy losing valuable equipment the city is also facing a cash crunch that comes to a head this week when the DWP commission decides if it will transfer $73 million to the city coffers. City controller Wendy Greuel’s on the case, and by the way, she has some ideas on how to fix the budget.

Guest:

Wendy Greuel, City Controller for Los Angeles

CALL HER:

  • Audit showing city can’t find 45% of items purchased with taxpayer funds.
  • Controller's op-ed from Friday's Daily News on ways to fix the city budget.
  • Controller announcing her audit of the DWP's finances, which should be completed early this month.  The DWP transfer is on the DWP commission’s agenda for today (Tuesday).
  •  Audit showing $10.3 million city housing loan was mishandled
