NOMINATION PERIOD OPEN FOR 17TH STATE SENATE DISTRICT

SPECIAL PRIMARY ELECTION ON FEBRUARY 15, 2011

Following the Governors Proclamation calling for a Special Vacancy General Election in the 17th State Senate District on April 19, 2011, Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean Logan today announced that persons intending to run for office in the 17th State Senate District Special Primary Election on February 15, 2011, may now file nomination documents through Monday, January 3, 2011 at 5 p.m. with the RR/CC at 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk, CA 90650, 2nd Floor, Room 2013, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (exception, the RR/CC will be closed on Friday, December 24, 2010 and Friday, December 31, 2010 in observance of holidays).

The Special Primary Election on February 15 is being held for the purpose of filling the vacancy for the unexpired term ending December 2, 2012, in the 17th State Senate District.  Assemblymember George Runner was elected in November to a seat on the state Board of Equalization and will be sworn in on Jan. 3.  Runner resigned his seat in the State Senate on December 21, 2010, creating a vacancy in the 17th State Senate district.

Persons intending to run for office must be a United States citizen, a registered voter and otherwise qualified to vote for that office at the time that nomination papers are issued to the person, and he or she must not have served two terms in the State Senate since November 6, 1990.

The filing fee is $952.91 and 40-60 nominating signatures are required.  All candidates must pay the nonrefundable filing fee at the time they receive their nomination papers or submit a minimum of 3,000 valid signatures on petitions in-lieu of filing fees by December 23, 2010.

Petition forms are also available for persons wishing to secure signatures in lieu of all or a portion of the filing fee.  Qualified signatures submitted on the in lieu petitions may also be applied to satisfy the required nominating signatures.

Persons filing signatures in-lieu of filing fees will be notified within ten calendar days of filing the petition regarding the result of the signature verification.  The deadline to file signature in-lieu petitions is December 23. The candidate shall then, prior to January 3, 2011, either submit a supplemental petition containing additional signatures or pay a pro rata portion of the filing fee to cover the deficiency.

Further information can be obtained on the RR/CC website www.lavote.net or by directly clicking https://lavote.net/SECURED/CANREG/ to obtain candidate registration information and to fill out a Candidate Registration Form which can be completed and submitted online and used in preparation of nomination documents.  Information is also available by calling the RR/CC Election Planning Section at (562) 462-2317.
